Movie Meltdown - Episode 157

This week we dive head first into “The Grind” when we address the topic of Remakes. Why are there so many these days? Are there different “types”? Are they necessary? And is there a way to make a good remake? We pose these questions and more are as we discuss the obvious bad examples as well as a surprisingly lengthy list of good remakes.

All of which eventually leads to... The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Trespass, Fright Night, the ratman, belted-overalls?, True Grit, kind of like Wilford Brimley... only more-so, Black Christmas, Hayden Christensen, Leonard Nimoy, Godfather 3, Tim Burton, Pumpkin, Crispin Glover, Hugo, Prince Humperdinck could care less about Buttercup, The Ring, BMX Bandits, is this a kissing book?, King Kong, Halloween, Footloose, The Fly, The Killers, Rooney Mara, The Eye, Psycho, Reefer Madness, Little Shop of Horrors, Ukulele Mike... this is bullshit man!, Star Trek, the six-fingered man, love for the original, Solaris, nuance in a foreign movie, Joel Schumacher, 3:10 to Yuma, Planet of the Apes, Peeping Tom, Shatner’s got pink flamingos in his yard, Willy Wonka, The Addams Family, The Killers, the clerk at Wild and Woolly Video, The Grudge, Dawn of the Dead, Scorsese in 3D, you know I learned a lot with Transformers, Let the Right One In, wearing the edges off the American audiences, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Others, Chris Sarandon, Reagan’s last movie, Ocean’s Eleven, Pulse, this impossible E minor chord, Jeff Goldblum, Count Dooku, killer backstory, Georges Méliès, Cape Fear, film school in the 50’s in Russia, Battle Royale, Fairy Tale Theater, Star Trek, your kid is evil... that’s all there is to it, Flirting, cold wet squishy stuff, not loving the original too much, Don Siegel, Henry V, The Hunger Games, The Ref, Funny Games, Harry Potter, Lolita, The Blob, Norman Fell, Nicole Kidman, Straw Dogs, and is he clueless... is he genius... or is he just an ass?

“It’s up to me to let it go... if it’s ruining something that I hold dear. It doesn’t ruin it - it’s me letting it ruin it.“

Movie Meltdown - Episode 156

Get out your mugs!! Because this week we are back at the coffee shop, and we are going to play... a game. Our newly adopted member of the gang, actress Jess Weixler, sits in with us again as we tackle this week’s Sofa Theater feature: Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games”. We discuss the examination of violence in this 1997 film and the director’s choice to remake the movie in 2007.

And as we rudely borrow eggs, we also mention... American tough talk, Man Bites Dog, furry Hillary Duff, In Cold Blood, polite society rules, Home Alone, Titanic 3D, a less-macho Jimmy Fallon, Taxi Driver 3D, the kids from Home Improvement, play this movie like a comedy, veiled menace, Duel, how shallow humans are, like rats in a cage, degrees of alienation, like your being uncomfortably tickled... too long, play this movie like a tragedy, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, torturing interior designers, Benny’s Video, I like that THAT is what made you uncomfortable in this movie, talking to the camera, Pretty in Pink, put a pig in her face, droogies, Bernard Shaw, being a details kind of guy and how did we get HERE... from Funny Games?!?

Spolier Alert: Seriously, we spoil most key moments and themes in both the 1997 and the 2007 versions of “Funny Games”. So please watch at least one of them before listening.

“If this film is a success, it will be very questionable as to if it’s a success for the right reasons.”
