Movie Meltdown - Episode 51.2

In this episode that may have "crossed the line." We sit down to discuss - SAVAGE DAWN".

First we listen to actor William Forsythe's memories of making this movie. Then we attempt to comprehend the film we just saw. Which leads to random thoughts that include…

"Colossally bad, that's the only way to describe this."

“They have a Sheriff and a deputy, a redneck, drunk deputy - and a midget”

“Who the hell did they make this movie for?”

“The final blow is a titty twister.”

“This is the pinnacle.”

“Even the movie was tired of itself.”

“This is epic bad!”

“There’s a lot of street fist-fights going on, like this is some sort of Clint Eastwood orangutan picture”

“Lance did a bunch of jumping around”

“I’m surprised half the actors in here didn’t break something”

“This is like a monster mash of bad movie actors”

“This was pretty fun!”

“There’s a lot of weird not-so-underlying homo-eroticism”

“I think they were making it up as they went along…”

“Nothing they do makes one lick of sense”

“People, you are missing out!”

“As far as bad, bad movies go, it’s pretty awesome!”

“I don’t even want to talk about it.”

Regardless of what the rest of the gang thinks, Bryan's final take on the movie…

"Savage Dawn is awesome. A drive-in classic unlike anything I've seen in years."

Join us for this memorable review.

Episode 32.2 - Movie Meltdown

- This week marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Purple Rain. (Hopefully you are as shocked and confounded by how that is possible as we are.) So to celebrate this film’s silver jubilee, we take a look at the music, the scene, the clothes and the sheer power of a rock star unlike the world had ever seen before.

- There’s lot of sweat and tears, and even a little blood as we recall (and discover for a couple of us) just how dark the story really is. And of course, leave it to our fearless leader to not only discuss, but to devote way too much effort into uncovering the hidden nuances of this 80’s classic. I mean, who else would bother to look for recurring motifs and grand symbolism in Purple Rain? Leave it to Bryan.

So come along and revisit the allure and spectacle that is Prince. And while your at it, take a quick dip in Lake Minnetonka!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 26

This is the Way the World Ends - Southland Tales.

This week we turn off our exhausted brains and attempt to discuss - Southland Tales. Richard Kelly of Donnie Darko fame assembles this conglomeration of ridiculousness, including the ensemble cast of Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. The Rock), Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, Justin Timberlake and Mandy Moore. Yep, somebody lost a bet...

This train wreck of a movie incites comments that range from, "I like this movie - screw you guys." to "It's a piece of shit!". And as we try to rationalize with ourselves, you'll hear quotes like, "And really, [I was] even questioning why I was liking it, as I was watching it. Because I shouldn't like it. It's a mess!" and "I don't think I'll ever see this movie again - ever. But I had a good time." This movie is a lot to deal with, and our discussion just scratches the surface.

Plus we interview filmmaker Linas Phillips, director of Walking to Werner. A movie about the director's  journey on foot from Seattle to Los Angeles to meet Werner Herzog. And along the way meets some strange characters and questions his true motivation.

And we talk about these and many other things... William Mapother, Pickin' and Trimmin', riffing on Twilight, Madonna sucks the life out of you, the Terminator TV series, sad in a good way, underlying adult themes, Wes Craven, Brigitte Bardot, Mazes and Monsters, Conan!, furry-footed tree dweller, Tony Scott, Revolver, Norwegian black metal, Werner Herzog, Jason Statham with hair, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, slice of Americana, "retool-ing" The Warriors, mandolins, Krysta Now, Eruption, Janeane Garofalo, Until the Light Takes Us, Great Speeches From a Dying World, Andre 3000, pumpkinhead Brandy, Atonement, Scream trilogy, Jaime King, Masi Oka, Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Marcus Nispel, Frank Frazetta, whoopee - a zeppelin, a mohawk on Shia LaBeouf, Church burnings, Flyover Film Festival, Ray Liotta needs to keep clothes on, more on Up, Rifftrax, Body of Evidence, the legend of the fisherman, being taken out by spaghetti, Nintendo and Dreamcast games, The Defenders and Pixar porn.

Come along for moments of genius, and the craziness that surrounds it. Have a nice apocalypse!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 22

This week we sit down and try to understand the complicated universe contained in S. Darko. A movie that by it’s very existence, has caused controversy. We try to look at it as a normal movie, and then we attempt to break it down from the Darko side.

So, if you have good comprehension of  tangent universes, the manipulated dead, artifacts, the living receiver, vector spirits and the fourth dimensional hypercube, well - you are a uber-geek. As for the rest of you, why not join us as we spoil the hell out of this Darko Tale.

A note from your Editor… So for this episode, I came up with an alternative to playing the standard clips from the movie. Instead I've put together a sample of some of the fervor that was worked up as S. Darko was being made. It became an extensive, time consuming process that I began to refer to as, The S. Darko Project. Some of it is ridiculous, some of it is heartfelt, but I think it's a good representation of people's thoughts about the making of this movie. But more than that, it shows the frenzy of Donnie’s fans at the thought of a sequel. I kind of liked the way it turned out. I hope you find it as entertaining as I did.

PLUS… we talk to LARRY BLAMIRE director of THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA. He gives us the story of how that movie came to be, updates on the sequel and more of his new projects.

As if all that wasn’t enough in this packed episode we as touch on… Daveigh Chase, Roky Erickson, a second viewing of Star Trek, Angels and Demons, Frank the bunny, Veronica Cartwright, Tom Woodruff Jr., movies vs. books, there are no pockets in the Ultraman suit, The 13th Floor Elevators, Bait, Tangent Dimensions, hanging out with movie stars, Sparkle Motion, Nathan Fillion’s package, a radioactive monster, being born with extra fingers, the basketball player of all Wookies, literate movie geeks, red car of death, lighting DVDs on fire, Monster Squad, Elizabeth Berkley, the grammatical structure of  new movies, ghosts from the future, Maniston, nice just means she hasn’t stabbed you yet, Ed Westwick, douche bag eyes, Sledge Hammer, Gemma Arterton, Ariel the unicorn, White Noise 2, Leonardo DiCaprio, hot freak girl, blowing up your city with a nuclear bomb just to go out in style, Russell Mulcahy, Jekyll and Hyde, Samantha Darko, Heathcliff, the new Sinatra, death threats for Chris Fisher, talking to your handgun, Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe, Dirty Harry on crack, Wuthering Heights, a crabby skeleton, why didn’t Kirk rip his shirt?, Steve Zahn, and the puzzling tesseract.

You have been chosen to save the universe and your sacrifice is to listen to this episode.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 19

This week we continue our Daniel Roebuck Double Feature with the lost and mostly forgotten 80's flick - DUDES.  Where punks from the big city travel across the country in a Volkswagen bug and have some wacky road trip moments until a run-in with some murderous psychos. Afterwards the survivors decide to embrace the western spirit and take out some New York-style justice on the killers.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 18

Come with us... we want to show you something... down by the river.

This week we kick off our Daniel Roebuck Double Feature with RIVER'S EDGE, the frighteningly realistic portrait of murder in a small town and the deconstruction of society as a whole. It's a heavy movie with an impressive cast and stark yet beautiful visuals. Come back with us as we revisit a time when kids played video games and listened to metal, the world was still on the brink of nuclear annihilation - and no one knew they were supposed to dislike Keanu Reeves...yet.

We also feature part one of our interview with Daniel Roebuck as well as these and many other random things... Zac Efron, narrowing down the movies that are important to you, Russell Crowe, vampire venom, Megan Fox's thumbs, The Last Unicorn, Guillermo del Toro, The Hobbit, vampire piggy-back rides, the bees, not the bees, sappy direction, Big Wolf on Campus, Michael Bay's little movie, Sofia Coppola, Stephen Dorff, I, Frankenstein, The Red Bull, Crank: High Voltage, a constipated vampire, how awesome Dennis Hopper is, rediscovering the band America, sleeveless denim jackets, our favorite inflatable sex doll, a tribute to Marilyn Chambers, the gorgeous young Ione Skye, cliches of high school teen life, Behind the Green Door, Ed O’Neil, birthday wishes to someone we don't know, a pop singer with really dorky hair, cool classic cars and our upcoming appearance and a crazy lady singing the Dawson's Creek theme song.

All we know is... the check's in the mail!!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 17

Seagal. What can you say about the man? He's an American institution - of bad film. And he certainly doesn't stray from that area this week, as we watch AGAINST THE DARK. Steven and some other random losers attempt to fight off a whole world (and hospital) of vampire/zombies. It's a rip-off of several genre films, haphazardly pieced together with a lead that can barely deliver lines, let alone keep his seams from bursting. As he gets older and heavier, his acting gets worse - and so do his movies. But that doesn't stop us from having a good time discussing the problems.

All that plus Hannah Montana, the super secret Venom script, Rob Zombie's Heavy Metal, Piranha 3D, Elizabeth Shue, Brittany Murphy, Liam Neeson is Zeus, Keith David, Dogma, Last of the Mohicans, the fact that we are not above bribes, the awesomeness of Psycho, vampire baseball, David Arneson, green prosthetics covered James Marsters and our new character for the Movie Fan Freakshow - The Crow Guy.

So, watch out... Steven Seagal is gonna do to you, what he's been doing to that cheeseburger.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 14

This week the movie geek gang welcomes our special guest Martin into the studio to join us for our usual brand of shenanigans. Then we head to the Sofa Theater to watch the handsome gun-slinger Dum and his upper-crust lover Rumpoey pine away for each other, while he and his friends gun down a lot of people. With outstanding visuals and an amazing color palette, TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER is an cinematic experience all it's own.

Plus we touch on these and many other topics: Yamagata, plastination, Jovovich, goose-stepping Nazi zombies, Nicolas Cage's chest hair, did Ray Stevenson sing The Streak?, Anthony Hopkins's rap career, Confucious, Beat Poets, Monster Attack Network, Solid Snake, Fidy Cent and the The Expendables, Gobstopper, feeling sad about Liam Neeson's wife and the bad guy from TimeCop, movie premieres in Thailand, working on the set of Terminator 3 and Fight Club, slapping around a large piece of meat, next week's road trip and rocking out with The Dead Next Door.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 13

The year was 1986, and the world anxiously awaited the next big project from George Lucas. With Lucas's clout, the writers of the latest Indiana Jones feature, a sizeable budget and shiny new special effects equipment - the possibilities were limitless. Then Howard reared his duck-billed head - and more than twenty years later, movie fans still haven't recovered. So re-live the timeless tale of a cigar-chomping, beer swilling, foul-mouthed fowl that gets sucked across the universe - only to hook up with one of Earth's hottest chicks. Weird? Yes. Entertaining? Well, that seems to be a matter of opinion.

So aside from posing  the creepy question of interspecies intercourse, we also talk about "The Goon", the irreplaceable Pennywise, reboots of movies made only a couple of years ago and the ego on Vin Diesel for comparing himself to Coppola and his films to Tolkien?

So DUCK in here with us as we and our listeners address the finer points of the 80's cliche classic that is HOWARD THE DUCK!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 12

You take the good, you take the bad, you take 'em both and there you have - Watchmen?? Well, something like that. This episode we tackle the alternate world of WATCHMEN. A world on the brink of nuclear annihilation. A world where costumed heroes exact vigilante justice. And a world exposed (quite regularly) to blue "man goods".

So we give our thoughts on the new superhero blockbuster - but mostly we just keep talking about Dr. Manhattan's glowing sex organs. Well that, and we get off on several tangents. Luckily we balance it out with a terrific interview with Martha Colburn - a filmmaker, and true visual artist. I guess, we hope that makes up for rest of the pervy conversations. But what can we do? One of our cast is obsessed with blue "man goods". But don't worry, she's getting help.
